Opened in 1904, The Norwich Hospital for the Insane was constructed to house the mentally ill on the scenic Thames River in the state of Connecticut. Beginning with just one building holding ninety-five patients, the hospital quickly expanded over the years to include twenty additional buildings by 1930, holding over 2,200 patients. As with most mental hospitals constructed at the time, the Norwich State Hospital was a self-sufficient institution, having its own power plant, bakery, farm, laboratory, theater, bowling alley, and housing for staff and doctors.
The central administration building was flanked by two narrow buildings named Awl and Salmon, with the latter used to house violent patients and those found guilty of crimes by insanity until the 1970s. Underground tunnels stretched back towards the river, connecting almost all the structures with a traversable passage. Many of the buildings were named after superintendents of other state hospitals or pioneers in the mental health industry, such as Kirkbride and Dix. In the 1930s, the Seymour building housed tubercular patients.
During the 1950s, the patient population peaked at over 3,180, and Norwich State Hospital expanded to include a new medical research facility, pathology department, and large residence buildings on the south side of the property, which had grown from 100 to 900 acres. The opening of these buildings meant the closing of the older structures on campus, which were used for storage or just left to rot. By the early 1970s, the addition of the new structures and the effect of decreasing patient population that was occurring all over the country left just seven of the original buildings in use. Interestingly, these 1950-era structures contained updated recreational facilities that replaced the old ones, leaving the campus with a total of two bowling alleys and three theaters.
Norwich State Hospital closed entirely in 1996, leaving only the Southeastern Connecticut Mental Health Authority in the Kettle and Lodge buildings until their relocation to the Uncas on Thames Hospital. The extensive tunnel network, full of cancer causing asbestos, along with the rotting underground tanks and old hospital landfills created very expensive cleanup costs. This, along with various state and town legislative issues, had left the property in limbo since its closure until 2011, when cleanup and demolition was started.
Growing up in Norwich, as children we referred to it as the "State Hospital" and would make off color jokes about you are going to get sent there. It was one of the most beautiful properties in Norwich with the old buildings, rolling lawns and overlooking the water. I am glad someone is going to change the property but it is still quite sad to see the buildings come down.

This is Heather from "Real Housewives of the OC", when she first started on the show, I liked her, even though she kept saying I am an actress, and I can not seem to find anything she has been in besides, Love Connection, is that show on anymore?
I liked that she is from the East Coast, ( Even though NY) and I am born and raised New England Girl. She s straight forward and knows how to get what she wants out of life. I think she would be fun to hang out with ( if I had money)..
Then last night episode she offended me so bad, I felt the need to share. She and (5) of her rich girlfriends have decided to open a restaurant in Orange County, because according to her there is no good restaurants there, you have to go to LA which you would take your helicopter not drive the 2 hours.
She worked as a "hostess" once and was not good at, but they think it would be "Fun" and a place they can hang out and catch up on their lives. She also, said, I can work while the kids are in school. When does she think the restaurant is busy 8am-2pm Mon-Fri? Think again, your busy times when the owners should be there is Evenings and Weekends.
Then her husband the plastic surgeon made a comment that if it fails in 2 years who cares? I will tell you who will care the people you hire to run it, who have put in the time and the energy and now want it to succeed they will care. With your attitudes you need to pay high salaries to get the right people in there to run it, because obviously you have no clue how a restaurant runs. Do you know what a P & L is? Where your food and liquor costs should be at? How to deal with the licensing bureaus? Health Inspectors? Linen companies? What your concept is ? How to make and price a menu? Then what advertising will cost? The Social Media Aspects how does that help your business?
My husband and I have been in this business from FOH to Back of House to Catering for over 20+ years and it just appalling to me that you just want to open a restaurant to have fun and hang out.

Yesterday was St. Patrick's Day and I felt "old" so I worked then we had a nice dinner and did not go out and get drunk or anything, today it is suppose to be up to 70' so we are going down to Portsmouth and enjoy the day together, and most likely drink beers at Portsmouth Brewery Company..

I am obsessed with purses, I have been on the look out for over a year for an Orange Purse, and I ordered it yesterday and it came today, so Happy! I know that makes about 100 purses, but you can never have enough, my latest obession is navy blue and a classic brown. The top is the style I would like for the navy purse, but that could change in the year until I find the exact one I want. Thought I would share my obsession.

Home invasion is my biggest fear! Not that we really have anything, but if we ever did, you think of your home as your refuge from the outside world, it is where you should feel the safest ever.

Ok, Reality Check:
I love the "Voice" so much more than American Idol. I think on Monday will be interesting when they go into the battle rounds, the judges were tough this year, the first year always seems to be easier, especially when you are not sure how it will go. I have no favorite yet, but that will change when I start to watch the battle rounds on Monday, March 5, 2012.
Top Chef: Texas - So happy that Paul won! He deserved to be the winner, Sarah gave him a good run but I always thought he should of won. I kind of wanted the final (2) to be Grayson and Paul or Paul and Ed. I am looking forward to the reunion show..
Project Runway- Now, I am a huge Mundo fan, but Austin deserved to win this challenge this week, he did an amazing job, to me shocked Kenley is still in this, she keeps making the same dress over and over, it is no longer 1950's !!
Real Housewives of the OC: I feel bad for Gretchen, Slade put her in a bad spot, she was trying to make nice with the ladies and he has to be an idiot & make a point, for what? You are a bad comic, and should never be given a microphone. Heather - I love her, straight forward, brunette and brashy. I do not agree with how she talks to her husband in front of the other ladies but I truly like her.. I wish Peggy was still on the show just to irate Alexis who I have never liked or cared about, she is a fake and she was the one competing with Peggy, not the other way around which makes her delusional too..
I did not see a new Chopped this week, but I did watch Anthony Bourdain do a double shift on the line at his old restaurant in NY, being in the business it is fun to see behind the scenes and see if people really realize what goes into making a successful restaurant run and how the kitchen does under pressure. He was flauntering but he held it together and got through it.
See you next time..

This week I could not watch "Glee" due to the Bullying and the attempted Sucide, it upset me so much.. I saw this article below on Fox News Business, and thought it was approiate.
Adults who thought their days of dealing with bullies were left behind on the schoolyard better think again.
Bullying plays out in the workplace in many ways, according to the survey:
For a targeted employee, bullying can cause stress and physical and mental ailments like high blood pressure, heart disease, post traumatic stress syndrome, and in its worst-case scenario, violence or suicide. The bullying also detracts from overall quality of life for the target and his or her family.
“Same gender, same race. There’s the rub, says Namie. “If you complain about misconduct that is “technically legal,” you are most likely to be labeled thin-skinned or a trouble maker.”
In fact, according to the CareerBuilder survey, 28% of employees took their concerns to a higher authority and reported the bully to their human resources department. While 38% of those workers say measures were taken to investigate and reach resolution, 62% say no action was taken.
Without protocols or consequential actions in place, HR becomes complicit and unaccountable for bad behavior, Graves says. This is not only harmful to employees, but also to corporations in which the diminished productivity of targeted individuals, their increased absenteeism and decreased employee retention affects the bottom line.
Still, targets often remain under a bully’s control for as long as 22 months, according to Namie in
Expert tips to help employees cope:
At some point, you may decide to fight back. “Be forewarned, says Namie. “The fight is uphill.”
Adults who thought their days of dealing with bullies were left behind on the schoolyard better think again.
A 2011 CareerBuilder study shows that 27% of U.S. workers have felt
bullied in the workplace with the majority not confronting or reporting the
bully.
Workplace bullying is defined as repeated
mistreatment of an individual employee by a person or group that takes the form
of verbal abuse, behavior that is humiliating, threatening, intimidating or
sabotages the targeted person’s work, according to the Workplace Bullying
Institute (WBI).
Bullying typically involves a misuse of power, leaving the target
defenseless: 11% of respondents say they felt bullied by a coworker, and 14% say
they felt bullied by their immediate supervisor. Another 7% say the bully was
not their boss, but someone higher up in the organization.Bullying plays out in the workplace in many ways, according to the survey:
- 43% of workers say their comments were dismissed or not acknowledged
- 40% claim they were falsely accused of mistakes
- 38% say they were harshly criticized
- 38% report they were forced into doing work that really wasn’t their job
- 37% claim standards and policies applied to them were not used on others
Gary Namie, WBI co-founder, senior consultant at
Work Doctor Inc. and
author of The Bully-FreeWorkplace, claims that as many as 72% of bullies
are bosses with a misconception about what it takes to be a good leader.
Experts say “tough” managers are not necessarily bullies if they are
respectful, fair and set high, yet reasonable, work expectations. But, says
Namie, tough and effective can turn into bullying if a manager exhibits a need
to control; repeatedly humiliates through unwarranted criticism rather than
constructively corrects; and levels a mix of verbal and strategic assaults that
affect the employee’s health and prevent him or her from performing well.
Bullying bosses lack vision, says Traciana Graves,
CEO of Project Bully Free Zone. They hold a “myopic
we-want-to-have-the-best-quarter” mentality without any forethought of what
happens to the employee—or the corporation—two-or-three years down the road.
The BulliedFor a targeted employee, bullying can cause stress and physical and mental ailments like high blood pressure, heart disease, post traumatic stress syndrome, and in its worst-case scenario, violence or suicide. The bullying also detracts from overall quality of life for the target and his or her family.
Yet, experts say, there is no easy fix. Namie says
while “protected status”
classes are safeguarded by Federal civil liberties and harassment laws, only 20%
of workplace mistreatment incidents involve such illegal discrimination that
enables victims to sue.
Namie says while 58% of targets are women compared to 42% of men, same-gender
bullying is prevalent with 80% of women perpetrators bullying other women.“Same gender, same race. There’s the rub, says Namie. “If you complain about misconduct that is “technically legal,” you are most likely to be labeled thin-skinned or a trouble maker.”

Still, targets often remain under a bully’s control for as long as 22 months, according to Namie in
Expert tips to help employees cope:
- Don’t be ashamed. Don’t keep your targeted status a “dirty secret,” says Graves. Derive sanity from people you can trust, and the naming stems your own self-doubt.
- Keep a written record. Start a your-eyes-only journal to blow off steam, and keep a log of all incidents. The log will be a helpful tool if you should decide to fight back.
- Stay centered amid repeated attacks. Adopt a mantra like “ignore the anger” and concentrate on the most humorous aspect of the bully’s physical appearance while under an attack. Or, use your own wit and sarcasm to create protective resistance in a safe and unspoken way, Namie says.
- Get a second opinion. Speak to a trusted friend or work ally to evaluate a bully’s constant criticism. Identify useful points and also what’s incorrect.
- Resist lowering yourself into a nasty fight. Personalized, emotional speak will be discounted and discredited, Namie says. Ask “Why are you talking to or treating me this way?”
- Take time off. Sick leave or short-term disability will allow you to assess and restore your physical and mental health; you can regain well-being and develop strength to plan for your next job.
Since 2003, law professor David
Yamada’s Healthy Workplace
Bill has been proposed in 16 states, and 11 states have adopted variations
of the bill, yet no bill has been written into law.
Namie says 64% of bullied targets lose their jobs whether they do or don’t
launch a counterattack. At some point, you may decide to fight back. “Be forewarned, says Namie. “The fight is uphill.”
